Tips for Traveling with Diabetes Medicines

People with diabetes, going on vacations or traveling for business purpose requires extra planning for diabetes medications. Changes in meal patterns, activity levels, and time zones can affect your blood sugar levels.
It's nearly summer, time for a trip to the beach, the mountains, or beyond. Wherever you're vacationing, some advance planning will help ensure you have a healthy trip. Before you travel, here is what to do:
1. Prepare your paperwork
Before you hit the road, gets a letter from your doctor explaining how you take care of your diabetes. If you use insulin or any other medications or lancing devices, it should list them. In case of emergency, you should also have a prescription for insulin or oral medication.
Are you traveling outside the U.S.? Be aware that prescription laws may be different in other countries than they are in the U.S. You can get a list of International Diabetes Federation groups from www.idf.org.You may also want to get a list of English-speaking doctors in the country or countries you plan to visit. Contact the International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers at www.iamat.org.

Pack at least twice as much medication and glucose-testing equipment (diabetes test strips, glucose test meters, body fat weight scale and monitors etc) as you expect to need. Have a carry-on bag with you at all times that contain:

Looking after your diabetes
The secret to continued good health and fruitful life despite diabetes lies in regular testing of your blood glucose, not missing any prescribed glucose tablets or insulin dosage and a healthy lifestyle. Today I will concentrate on how you can monitor your blood glucose.
Monitoring your blood glucose levels (Glucose testing strips)
The key to keeping your blood glucose levels or (sugar levels as it is commonly known), under control is to keep your sugar level within the recommended range of 4 to 7 millimoles per liter. Only regular monitoring with diabetic strips can help you achieve this.
Measuring your own blood glucose levels is quite easy if you have a good quality branded digital blood glucose monitors. If you don't have one the neighborhood chemist or any online website specializing in diabetes monitoring tools can help you.
When it comes to glucose monitors, accuracy is the key, so do not buy cheap Chinese glucose monitors. Our own branded blood glucose test meter (glucometers) is highly accurate and usually cost between $50 and $75. In addition to the glucometer, you will also need a box of test strips ($40~$60) and a pack of Lancets ($15~$25). The diabetic test strip and lancets are to be replenished as and when required. Replace the battery in the Glucometer as and when required. If the blood sugar meters does not have a battery level indicator you should replace the battery in the glucometer every six months or so. A weak battery can induce faulty results.
Tip: Buy a blood glucose test strips that has a large digital readout, adequate memory and battery indicator.
When and how often you use the blood sugar monitors depends on your treatment, the food you consume and level of physical activity. Apart from regular testing at home, you should also do an HbA1c test every six months. This test is done at your local diabetes clinic and the result gives you an overall picture of your blood glucose levels. HbA1c test results should be as close to 7% (or below). Even a tiny fraction above 7% should be brought to the attention of your doctor.
You can keep your blood glucose under control by:
1) Eating regular small healthy diabetic diet meals so as to avoid major fluctuations in your blood glucose levels.
2) Including adequate levels of physical activity so the insulin in your body works more effectively.
3) Reducing any excess body fat by regular checkup with body fat monitor. (Include half yearly body fat analysis in your health plan/ schedule).
4) Take your diabetes (and any other prescribed) tablets and diabetes supplements according to the schedule given to you.
5) Monitor your blood glucose levels and learn to adjust your treatment according to the results.

Monitoring your blood glucose levels (Glucose testing strips)
The key to keeping your blood glucose levels or (sugar levels as it is commonly known), under control is to keep your sugar level within the recommended range of 4 to 7 millimoles per liter. Only regular monitoring with diabetic strips can help you achieve this.
Measuring your own blood glucose levels is quite easy if you have a good quality branded digital blood glucose monitors. If you don't have one the neighborhood chemist or any online website specializing in diabetes monitoring tools can help you.
When it comes to glucose monitors, accuracy is the key, so do not buy cheap Chinese glucose monitors. Our own branded blood glucose test meter (glucometers) is highly accurate and usually cost between $50 and $75. In addition to the glucometer, you will also need a box of test strips ($40~$60) and a pack of Lancets ($15~$25). The diabetic test strip and lancets are to be replenished as and when required. Replace the battery in the Glucometer as and when required. If the blood sugar meters does not have a battery level indicator you should replace the battery in the glucometer every six months or so. A weak battery can induce faulty results.
Tip: Buy a blood glucose test strips that has a large digital readout, adequate memory and battery indicator.
When and how often you use the blood sugar monitors depends on your treatment, the food you consume and level of physical activity. Apart from regular testing at home, you should also do an HbA1c test every six months. This test is done at your local diabetes clinic and the result gives you an overall picture of your blood glucose levels. HbA1c test results should be as close to 7% (or below). Even a tiny fraction above 7% should be brought to the attention of your doctor.
You can keep your blood glucose under control by:
1) Eating regular small healthy diabetic diet meals so as to avoid major fluctuations in your blood glucose levels.
2) Including adequate levels of physical activity so the insulin in your body works more effectively.
3) Reducing any excess body fat by regular checkup with body fat monitor. (Include half yearly body fat analysis in your health plan/ schedule).
4) Take your diabetes (and any other prescribed) tablets and diabetes supplements according to the schedule given to you.
5) Monitor your blood glucose levels and learn to adjust your treatment according to the results.

Diagnostic tests to confirm (or deny) presence of diabetes
The most common tests are the urine and finger prick test. However, to be doubly sure, you need to conduct at least two or three lab tests including random or fasting blood glucose test meter and oral glucose tolerance tests. If test results are positive, it is a good idea to redo the tests on another randomly selected day.
Finger prick test. A finger is pricked with a sterilized device and a tiny drop of blood is collected and placed on a accu-chek active test strips. The strip is inserted into a digital diabetic test strip and an instant readout is obtained. This test takes less than a minute.
Urine test A chemical coated dipstick is dipped into a ‘sample bottle' that contains a sample of your urine. The dipstick instantly changes color in proportion to the level of glucose in the urine. This test too takes less than a minute.
Random blood glucose test A diabetic syringes is used to collect a small sample of your blood which is then analyzed in a lab. The results are often delivered the following day.
Oral glucose tolerance test You are requested not to eat or drink anything in the morning. A small blood sample is taken and sent for analysis to a laboratory. You are again requested to visit the clinic one hour after having lunch and fresh sample of blood is collected for analysis. The two pre and post results indicate your glucose tolerance level. A low tolerance level could indicate that you either have Type 2 diabetes or are on the verge of developing it.
Fasting Blood Sugar Testing Your last drink and meal should be at least 8 hours prior to taking this test. An insulin syringes is used to collect a tiny blood sample which is sent to the lab for analysis. The test results are usually received the same evening or following morning.
If all the above test results are returned positive for presence of excessive glucose, I recommend you redo the test the following week preferably at a different clinic. If the second test set too returns similar results than you can be sure you do have diabetes. Typically, glucose above 6 millimoles / liter of blood is not normal and you should consult your doctor immediately.
If diabetes is confirmed, it would be a good idea to also run a checkup on your body fat percentage through body fat monitor, blood pressure by automatic blood pressure monitor, kidneys, liver and thyroid. Additionally you should undergo a foot examination (for circulation and nerve supply) and eye examination (check for any damage due to glucose buildup).

Diabetes Mellitus is also simply known as diabetes. It is
the disease characterized by a malfunctioning metabolism
and a high blood sugar level.
The result can be low levels of insulin or abnormal insulin
resistance. This mixed with inadequate levels of insulin
secretion results in diabetes.
Symptoms of diabetes mellitus include increased urine
production, excessive thirst, extreme fatigue, and
excessive thirst and weight loss. These symptoms though may
not be present in those people with only mildly elevated
sugar levels.

diabetes, which occur only during pregnancy. Each type has
a different cause and different severity of symptoms.
But all forms of diabetes are dangerous if not treated.
With proper management though, people with diabetes can
live a long, healthy, normal life.

insulin producing cells in the pancreas. This ultimately
leads to an insulin deficiency.

With obesity levels being at an all time high, the epidemic
of type 2 diabetes is growing at an alarming rate, and will
only get worse.
Between 2001 and 2002, the diagnosis of diabetes went from
5.5 percent of Americans to an alarming 6.5 percent. In
just one year!
Overall, twelve million Americans have been diagnosed and
another 5 million Americans have diabetes and don’t know
it. And yet another 12 millions are on their way to type 2
diabetes because of impaired glucose levels.
Not knowing is the worst because risks of untreated
diabetes puts us at a terrible risk of complications
including but not limited to blindness, amputations and
ultimately death.
The stickler is, that type 2 diabetes is almost completely
preventable. Doctor’s say eat less, eat better and
exercise. The numbers show just how many Americans are
currently overweight.
Statistically, people are now living longer, and it has
been on the rise for years. But this will not continue if
type 2 diabetes is not put under control.
We are a gluttonous society and ultimately it is affecting
how we live and how long we live.
And unfortunately, the diabetes epidemic is not just a US
problem. It is spreading worldwide with epidemic reports in
Asia, the Middle East and the Caribbean.
It is estimated that by 2025, the number of diabetics
worldwide will rise to 380 million. And diabetes is now
affecting more of the young and middle-aged population in

Diabetes in Pets
It is not only the human kind that can develop diabetes.
Even our beloved pets, no matter how well we care for them,
can develop diabetes.
This is often a scary situation for the pet owner and the
first question that is usually asked of the veterinarian is
-will my pet need to be put to sleep-
Of course this is a difficult issue and the answer may vary
on the overall age and health of your pet.
Many older pets that are diagnosed with diabetes go on to
live many more happy years, but this takes commitment and
close care of your pet.
Diabetic cats and dogs can live just as long as perfectly
healthy pet if the diabetes is diagnosed and treated
properly by both the veterinarian and the owner.
This takes great commitment from the owner. Pets must be
cared for and watched daily with a high level of care and
patience.
There can be no feeding the cat and forgetting until the
next day. There is no leaving the pet along to go on a
trip. Every day your pet will need medication, fed a proper
diet and his behavior will need to be monitored closely.
This doesn’t mean you will have to give up your job and
stay home full time with your pet, but it does mean you
will have to pay more attention to what his behavior is and
know what to do if the situation should change.
It is also more of a financial obligation to have a sick
pet. So it is something that should be discussed in length
with your vet.

Yoga Helps Reduce Diabetes Complications
A group of doctors did a study on 200 Mornons in the state of Utah who fasted regularly (as part of their culture). The results were compared with other individuals (non-Mornons) that didn't fast and found remarkable differences. Specifically, X-ray scans revealed normal arteries in about half of the Mornons who fasted v/s narrowed arteries in 75 per cent individuals who didn't fast.
One of my clients came to my clinic with this magazine clipping that more or less encouraged fasting as a way to avoid diabetes and several other diseases. The research conducted by a team of doctors seemed to suggest that fasting halved the chances of getting diabetes.
The test group did not take any nourishment other than water for a period of 24 hours. All individuals were administered a series of health checks and were monitored even when they did not fast. The tests revealed that during the fasting stage, significant amounts of human growth hormone were released. The human growth hormone triggers metabolism which in turn burns fat. During the fasting stage, cholesterol levels also shot up but returned to pre-fasting stage after the fast was over.
I for one have a serious problem with the so called conclusion of this research. I admit that fasting would trigger release of human growth hormone but how effective is that in losing fat? Just as refilling your gas tank will fill up empty spaces in it, so too when you eat the next day after you fast, any little fat that might have been lost is replaced. This is a known fact. As for differences in the arteries, there is simply no evidence that fasting alone had anything to do with it. Let us not forget that the Mornons live life differently. They do not eat like we do. And even in their case, over 40% showed reduced artery width. So to draw conclusions on the basis of just one factor i.e. fasting would in my book, be ridiculous.

In all my years of providing service and advice to the community, I've never advised fasting as a means of reducing weight or as a means of achieving other imagined benefits. Remember when you fast, the body is starved of nutrition. It sources its nourishment internally until food is again available. Once food is obtained, the first task the body does is to replenish the stocks of energy that were utilized during the fast.
Fasting as a body cleanser
Again, there isn't an iota of scientific evidence that fasting switches the body into some kind of self-cleaning mode or that fasting allows our organs to recuperate. If that were so, our genes would have programmed individual organs including the heart, to shut off from time to time.

Healthy and Fulfilling Life despite Diabetes

I'm Deborah Susan, a dietician and personal trainer specializing in nutrition, physical fitness and diabetes diet plan for diabetics. In writing these article, it is my ardent desire to provide useful, practical knowledge (including a few low fat low carb recipes for diabetic) to help people living with diabetes to make decisions that enable them to live successfully with diabetes.
To begin with, although 99% of you probably already know what diabetes is, I'd like to define it precisely so that at the end of this first article, we are all on the same page and do not have differing ideas on what diabetes is.
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a condition in which your body cannot control the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood because (a) your pancreas (not kidneys) does not produce enough insulin or (b) your body cells are resistant to the action of insulin, that's why we take insulin diabetic syringes.
When your blood glucose level rises, the glucose cannot get into the cells which means despite all the sugar, your body is deprived of energy. Lack of energy triggers the break down and conversion of fat and muscles into alternate source of energy. Always prefer to use diabetic glucose meter for checking your glucose level regularly
What goes wrong in diabetes?
Since the Glucose in your blood does not get utilized, it gets flushed out through urine. Meanwhile the body breaks down fat and muscle as an alternate energy source causing rapid (and dangerous) weight loss. Rapid break down of fat causes build up of toxic chemicals in your blood. If left unattended, all organs in the body begin to deteriorate and fail, ultimately leading to death – and a painful one at that.
Type 1 Diabetes

Truth: Wrong! Type 1 and Type 2 are two totally different types of diabetes
People diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes do not produce any insulin. They need to be treated with insulin given by insulin syringes & injection or via diabetes Insulin Pump. (Insulin via a tablet would not be effective as it would be destroyed in the digestion process).
Type 2 Diabetes
This is the more common form of diabetes. Obesity is the primary reason for Type 2 diabetes. People diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes do not produce sufficient quantities of insulin. Initially your pancreas respond to the demand (created by obesity), by producing more insulin. However, it cannot do so indefinitely. Corrective action includes reducing body fat by checking through Body Fat Scales and leading a healthier lifestyle. If corrective action is taken soon enough, then people suffering from Type 2 diabetes need not take any medication such as glucose tablets or glucose supplements and can lead a healthy normal life. Diabetes In Children
Diabetes in children is also known as juvenile diabetes,
but more commonly known as type 1 diabetes. It is the most
common form of diabetes in children with ninety to
ninety-five percent of carriers being under 16.
Juvenile diabetes is caused by the inability of the
pancreas to produce insulin. It is an autoimmune disease,
which means the bodies own defense system attacks the
body’s tissues or organs.
In the last 30 years the number of juvenile diabetes had
increased three times over and in Europe and the US we are
now seeing type 2 diabetes in children for the first time.
Obesity easily explains type 2, but not why there is such a
rise in type 1 diabetes in children. It is believed that a
mixture of genetics and environmental factors are what
triggers juvenile diabetes. But the majority of children
don’t have a family history of diabetes.
The symptoms for juvenile diabetes are the same as in
adults. Thirst, weight loss, fatigue, frequent urination is
typical, but diabetes in children can also increase stomach
pains, headaches and behavior problems.
Doctors should consider the possibility of diabetes in
children who have unexplained stomach pains for a few
weeks, along with the typical symptoms.

What does gum disease have to do with diabetes ?
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is one of the leading causes of tooth loss among adults and is also frequently linked to the control of diabetes. The title sounds kind of odd doesn't it? But the fact remains that if you suffer from diabetes, chances are, your gums too would suffer. Most doctors who treat diabetic patients are either are unaware of the link between diabetes and gums or simply forget to mention it. The result is that problem with the gums are often overlooked or get misdiagnosed and mistreated.
When diabetes is poorly managed, it can lead to periodontal diseases in both children and adults. It has been recorded as affecting children as young as 10. Periodontal disease and diabetes may be classified as those infections which affect the bone holding the teeth in place, and the gums.
Last week one of my clients missed his appointment with me and turned up three days later stating that he had to do a root canal. It struck me as odd because this client was always fastidious about his hygiene so I asked if his dentist had specifically identified any cavity or infection that might have necessitated such a procedure. He said no, but that my client had complained of sensitive teeth and hence the dentist felt a root canal would help. Sounded a bit shaky to me but I thought it best not to argue the issue further especially since the deed was done and nothing I said would either reverse or make my client feel better. Besides, I only had my client's version of events.
Fact is, diabetes specialists have often noted increased incidences of gum infection amongst diabetics. The high blood sugar levels typically found amongst diabetics makes it difficult for their body to ward off bacteria and infection that causes oral diseases.
There are three ways to keep the threat of oral infection at bay – good oral hygiene, keeping your blood sugar levels under control and, by taking antioxidant supplements. Antioxidant supplements such as vitamin "C", bioflavonoids and grape seed extract s help combat bacterial infections in the gums.
I would also recommend inclusion of currants, blueberries, blackberries and cranberries, oranges, grapefruit and tangerines in your diet. These provide antioxidant and bioflavonoids naturally. In fact, if you have enough of these in your daily diet, you need not take antioxidant supplements at all – just make sure you take them in their natural form and not as a juice or jam. Remember these fruits lose their antioxidant the moment they are peeled or crushed or processed.
If you notice your teeth have suddenly become sensitive ask yourself if you also have a cold or nasal infection – the two are interconnected. The moment your cold or nasal infection is cured, your teeth will be back to normal. If a procedure has been specified and you have some doubt about it, you can always seek a second opinion – it's your right. In all cases, maintain your hygiene. It is cheaper to maintain our hygiene than paying for expensive cures.

Type 2 diabetes
Diabetes also known as 'Diabetes Mellitus' is a medical disease of metabolic characterized by increasing level of glucose (sugar) in blood followed by insufficient generation of insulin, in body or irresponsiveness of body cells to the insulin generated.
