Diabetes Mellitus is also simply known as diabetes. It is
the disease characterized by a malfunctioning metabolism
and a high blood sugar level.
The result can be low levels of insulin or abnormal insulin
resistance. This mixed with inadequate levels of insulin
secretion results in diabetes.
Symptoms of diabetes mellitus include increased urine
production, excessive thirst, extreme fatigue, and
excessive thirst and weight loss. These symptoms though may
not be present in those people with only mildly elevated
sugar levels.
Diabetes mellitus includes type 1, type 2 and gestational
diabetes, which occur only during pregnancy. Each type has
a different cause and different severity of symptoms.
But all forms of diabetes are dangerous if not treated.
With proper management though, people with diabetes can
live a long, healthy, normal life.
The main cause of type 1 diabetes mellitus is the loss of
insulin producing cells in the pancreas. This ultimately
leads to an insulin deficiency.
Type 1 diabetes mellitus is typically found in children and
young adults. It is also termed juvenile diabetes. The
common treatment for type 1 diabetes mellitus is daily
insulin injections to replace the insulin the body is not
producing properly, along with careful blood glucose
monitoring.
Without careful monitoring and treatment, complications
from diabetes could include loss of limps such as arms,
legs and feet, blindness and diabetic comas, which can be
fatal.
It is extremely important that if you suspect you or your
child to have symptoms of diabetes, that you visit your
doctor to be tested. If the tests are positive it is not
the end of the world. With careful monitoring and care,
type 1 diabetics can live long healthy lives.

Diabetes Epidemic
With obesity levels being at an all time high, the epidemic
of type 2 diabetes is growing at an alarming rate, and will
only get worse.
Between 2001 and 2002, the diagnosis of diabetes went from
5.5 percent of Americans to an alarming 6.5 percent. In
just one year!
Overall, twelve million Americans have been diagnosed and
another 5 million Americans have diabetes and don’t know
it. And yet another 12 millions are on their way to type 2
diabetes because of impaired glucose levels.
Not knowing is the worst because risks of untreated
diabetes puts us at a terrible risk of complications
including but not limited to blindness, amputations and
ultimately death.
The stickler is, that type 2 diabetes is almost completely
preventable. Doctor’s say eat less, eat better and
exercise. The numbers show just how many Americans are
currently overweight.
Statistically, people are now living longer, and it has
been on the rise for years. But this will not continue if
type 2 diabetes is not put under control.
We are a gluttonous society and ultimately it is affecting
how we live and how long we live.
And unfortunately, the diabetes epidemic is not just a US
problem. It is spreading worldwide with epidemic reports in
Asia, the Middle East and the Caribbean.
It is estimated that by 2025, the number of diabetics
worldwide will rise to 380 million. And diabetes is now
affecting more of the young and middle-aged population in
developing countries between the ages of 40 and 59.

Making Your Customized Diabetic Gift Basket
Diabetes creates many obstacles and can be tough to keep up with. There are medicines to take at certain times, questions that need to be answered, body parts to take extra special care of, and items to always take with you. There are varieties of gift items that can make your life as a diabetic, or some-one you know, a little more convenient and a lot more fun!
During gifting season, most people are thoroughly confused about what to gifts for diabetics; although, there are hundreds and thousands of gift options, the problem lies in the fact that most gifts are simply not suitable for those afflicted with diabetes.
In this context, while gift baskets are immensely popular as a whole, again the same problem is faced. How to include only those items that are suitable for diabetics. This is especially true since many gift baskets have this rather uncanny tendency to have sweet treats as staple among the included items.
If that is the dilemma you are facing, why not go ahead and make your own gift baskets for diabetics? That way, you will be able to choose only those items which are suitable to diabetics, and also have the added advantage of giving a very personalized gift basket for diabetics – one which the recipient will easily recognize as having a personal touch from you.
The first step is of course to get a suitable gift basket; with options galore, the choice may not be a very easy one. Perhaps, you could go for a color and design which the recipient would appreciate in particular.
Items for the basket – Aah! That will definitely be the key to success, as far as the appeal of your diabetic gift basket is concerned, so make sure that you make the best choice here. Low sugar items or sugar free items should definitely be at the top of your agenda; of course, you do have the option of not including any sweet items such as the above, at all, but what the heck – does gifting season really seem that, if there is no sweet treat included?
That said, you could also include other food items that are not in the sweet category, and yet are likely to be appreciated by the recipient, perhaps because they are personal favorites. How about some real cheese low fat, which also happens to be absolutely low-carb? Sounds perfect!
Looking beyond food items, how about some personal dress options, suited to diabetics? You could include , socks or stockings that are particularly tailored to the needs of diabetics. Also consider heart rate monitor and measurement devices, which any diabetes afflicted recipient would truly appreciate. For instance, with glucose test monitors getting more and more compact in size, they could be a potentially perfect choice for inclusion in the gift basket.
Finally, with all the choices appropriately made, now it is time to pack the basket nicely so as to maximize its appeal. Remember that, like with a lot of things in life, packaging makes a lot of difference to the appeal of the product in question! In this case, you could consider wrapping the basket up in transparent cellophane so as to showcase its contents. Further, you could tie a ribbon on top, for enhanced appeal.

The Basics of a Healthy Diabetes Diet!
In order for diabetics to free themselves of diabetes complications, they need to learn about diabetes diet recipes basics. Learning and practicing diabetes diet basics has been proven to control blood sugar levels and control body fat weight. And here is some very positive news: if you know how to improve your health, you can free yourself from many diabetes complications. While there are many ways this can be achieved, developing an insight into the diabetes diet basics will certainly go a long way.
Right from the start, it is important to point out that there is no simple dietary solution that can reverse diabetes. Looking for a ‘magic cure' in the form of a particular diet simply is not the way to go. However, those that understand diabetes meal planning basics will discover remarkable improvements in their blood sugar levels and body fat weight.
Why is this so? It is because the proper type two diabetes diet can aid in reducing glucose levels in the blood. That alone will have significant impact on your overall health and wellness. This does raise the question as to what dietary choices are needed to achieve such a goal. The choices are not very complicated or at least not very complicated in terms of their general description.
Basically, you need to be aware of the amount of diabetes carbohydrates that you eat and drink. Carbohydrates are, sugars, soluble fiber, and insoluble fiber. And it becomes important that no diabetes diet contains excessive amounts of easy to digest carbohydrates. And, most assuredly, you would want to avoid those carbs that come from processed, refined sugars – aka white table sugar. Such sugar is the basic ingredient of junk food which is why it is certainly best avoided.
But, that does not mean your diabetes diet should be severely restricted in terms of carb intake. You do not want to venture into the realm of a "no carb" fad diet like Adkins Diet and the Zone Diet, where you are eating tons of fats and proteins. That may give you a slim physique (Bodybuilders love the low carb diet for just this reason) but it would also be an unbalanced diet that comes with hosts of other problems. If you have kidney disease, you should avoid a high protein diet – Check with your doctor and take low fat low carb recipes.
You will want your diabetic meal plans to be balanced, healthy, and maintain the right amount of calories to maintain a proper body weight. Now, some may be shaking their head at this notion. They may agree wholeheartedly that this is the right plan of action to take. Yet, they may not exactly know how to select and prepare their meals in such a way.
Here is some good news: you may not have to do so on your own. TypeFreeDiabetes.com offers diabetic meals delivered which can purchase as a gift for a diabetic or anyone who wants to eat healthy. Such delicious meals are perfectly designed by our chefs to ensure you are getting the right amount of carbs, fats, and proteins. And, of course, the calorie counts of the meals will not promote weight gain.
For those that may be struggling with crafting a diabetes diet plan, such delivered prepared meals may prove to be the best purchase they could make. Why make meal selections difficult for yourself when the meals are just waiting for you to pick out? This is the much easier plan.

Healthy and Fulfilling Life despite Diabetes
Diabetic glucose meterDiabetic glucose meter
I'm Deborah Susan, a dietician and personal trainer specializing in nutrition, physical fitness and diabetes diet plan for diabetics. Over the years I've noticed a trend in the questions that diabetics and their family members have been asking. Also, many of my clients had often suggested I not let my knowledge and experience go waste; instead, I should write a book that would help society cope and live a healthy life despite diabetes. A friend recently suggested I start with an article and if I like the response I could write a book.
Although many have said I have a way with words, I must state that I am not a writer or author and have until today, never written so much as an article let alone a book. I've decided to take the plunge primarily because I have seen intense and unnecessary suffering caused by wrong information, phobia, misguidance and myths. Lack of proper guidance and knowledge ultimately proves expensive in more ways than can be imagined.
In writing these article, it is my ardent desire to provide useful, practical knowledge (including a few low fat low carb recipes for diabetic) to help people living with diabetes to make decisions that enable them to live successfully with diabetes.
To begin with, although 99% of you probably already know what diabetes is, I'd like to define it precisely so that at the end of this first article, we are all on the same page and do not have differing ideas on what diabetes is.
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a condition in which your body cannot control the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood because (a) your pancreas (not kidneys) does not produce enough insulin or (b) your body cells are resistant to the action of insulin, that's why we take insulin diabetic syringes.
When your blood glucose level rises, the glucose cannot get into the cells which means despite all the sugar, your body is deprived of energy. Lack of energy triggers the break down and conversion of fat and muscles into alternate source of energy. Always prefer to use diabetic glucose meter for checking your glucose level regularly
What goes wrong in diabetes?
Since the Glucose in your blood does not get utilized, it gets flushed out through urine. Meanwhile the body breaks down fat and muscle as an alternate energy source causing rapid (and dangerous) weight loss. Rapid break down of fat causes build up of toxic chemicals in your blood. If left unattended, all organs in the body begin to deteriorate and fail, ultimately leading to death – and a painful one at that.
Type 1 Diabetes
Myth: Diabetes begins with Type 1 and then progress to Type 2
Truth: Wrong! Type 1 and Type 2 are two totally different types of diabetes
People diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes do not produce any insulin. They need to be treated with insulin given by insulin syringes & injection or via diabetes Insulin Pump. (Insulin via a tablet would not be effective as it would be destroyed in the digestion process).
Type 2 Diabetes
This is the more common form of diabetes. Obesity is the primary reason for Type 2 diabetes. People diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes do not produce sufficient quantities of insulin. Initially your pancreas respond to the demand (created by obesity), by producing more insulin. However, it cannot do so indefinitely. Corrective action includes reducing body fat by checking through Body Fat Scales and leading a healthier lifestyle. If corrective action is taken soon enough, then people suffering from Type 2 diabetes need not take any medication such as glucose tablets or glucose supplements and can lead a healthy normal life. Failure to take corrective action will create a need for insulin injections to supplement the inadequate quantum of insulin produced by your pancreas.
Myth: Type 1 diabetes is serious
Truth: Yes and No. However Type 2 likely to be more harmful because people often have it for years before being diagnosed. Having it for years can lead to long term complications.
Now that we know what diabetes is, in my next article I shall attempt to answer the second most frequently asked question: Why does diabetes develop?
I hope my effort in writing these articles helps you lead a more knowledgeable and healthier life.
Typefreediabetes offers a full line of diabetic testing supplies, including incontinence products for women; diabetes supplements, seamless diabetic socks, blood pressure monitor, durable diabetes medical equipment, diabetic dessert and many other home health care products and supplies. Making the Most of the Lazy Days of Summer
Summer is in full-swing, which means that the lazy days of summer are officially upon us! Whether you're summer plans involve relaxing by the pool with a good book and cold beverage, snacks of diabetes, getting some sunshine at the beach, or driving the kids from one summertime event to another, here are some tips to help you make the most of these lazy days while staying healthy and energetic!
Get in the Water: The summer is filled with activities that are centered around water. From water sports like sailing to simply jumping into the crystal clear pool waters you've been dying to test out, it's time to take advantage of water rather than sunbathe near it!
Swimming and water aerobics provide some of the best outlets for toning your entire body using water for resistance (rather than those clunky weights at the gym). Or spend some time in the water with your kids next time they jump in the pool…you'll be surprised by how toned your arms can get from tossing them into back flips!
Walk that Beach: Just about everyone takes a few days to get down to the beach each summer. Next time you're at the beach, don't just watch the sand crabs; get out and enjoy the sand yourself! Walking or running with diabetic footwear in sand not only helps to tone your leg muscles (the softer the sand, the harder it is to walk and the more calories you'll burn), but it will ensure that you get at least a little bit of cardio in between bouts of wave watching and book reading. Be sure to apply sunscreen before you head out for a walk; just 30 minutes in the bright summer sun is enough to burn your skin and scalp.
Don't Just Wait in the Car
If you're like many parents and you think that the summer has come down to a series of waiting periods while your children complete their summer activities, you're not alone. But next time your child has a soccer practice, dance lesson, or art class, don't just wait in the car; get out and exercise!
Dress for the occasion in workout clothes, or simply keep some sneakers in the car if you don't have time for a full-on workout. While your child practices soccer, walk or jog around the field. If your child is taking a dance lesson, take time for yourself to run around the neighborhood where the dance studio is.
With the high prices of gas these days, it's more cost effective to stay in the vicinity of the lesson rather than going home and coming back after your child's activity anyway. You'll usually have about an hour to yourself to get active and keep your weight down, or pull in other parents to work out together while you wait.
Always Have a Snack On-Hand Like Sugarfree Desserts
Almond Snack It's easy to gain weight in the summer with the level of physical activity decreasing in the hot sun while the number of ice cream stands generally goes through the roof. In order to put cravings at bay, make sure to always have a healthy snack on hand for you and your family. Almonds and dried fruit are excellent, healthy choices and they last in even the hottest of cars.

Diabetes Management
As of 2007, there is no cure for either type 1 or type 2
diabetes. This may seem like a dim outlook for many people,
but the fact is that even though there is no cure, there
certainly are ways to manage your diabetes.
Proper management can give you many years of healthy
living.
Diabetes management starts with a visit to your doctor.
first, finding out you have diabetes, what type you have
then arming yourself with as much information as possible
about the diabetes you are diagnosed with.
All management begins with controlling the glucose cycle.
The glucose cycle is affected by two factors, entry of
glucose into the bloodstream and blood levels of insulin to
control the transport out.
Your glucose levels are very sensitive to both diet and
exercise, so change in either should first be discussed
with your physician. Proper management of diabetes can be
very intrusive to the patient.
Proper management requires a complete lifestyle change and
frequent, sometimes multi-daily checks of glucose in the
blood.
It can change as people grow and develop and no two cases
are ever really the same. Today it is easier to measure the
blood sugar level.
Glucose meters are readily available and are quite easy to
use with a little practice and patience.
With a small drop of blood to the testing strip attached to
the glucose meter, the user is given the number, which
represents their blood sugar level. This in turn will let
the user know if and when insulin is needed.

Diabetes In Children
Diabetes in children is also known as juvenile diabetes,
but more commonly known as type 1 diabetes. It is the most
common form of diabetes in children with ninety to
ninety-five percent of carriers being under 16.
Juvenile diabetes is caused by the inability of the
pancreas to produce insulin. It is an autoimmune disease,
which means the bodies own defense system attacks the
body’s tissues or organs.
In the last 30 years the number of juvenile diabetes had
increased three times over and in Europe and the US we are
now seeing type 2 diabetes in children for the first time.
Obesity easily explains type 2, but not why there is such a
rise in type 1 diabetes in children. It is believed that a
mixture of genetics and environmental factors are what
triggers juvenile diabetes. But the majority of children
don’t have a family history of diabetes.
The symptoms for juvenile diabetes are the same as in
adults. Thirst, weight loss, fatigue, frequent urination is
typical, but diabetes in children can also increase stomach
pains, headaches and behavior problems.
Doctors should consider the possibility of diabetes in
children who have unexplained stomach pains for a few
weeks, along with the typical symptoms.
If you believe your child may be experiencing these
symptoms you should schedule them for a thorough
examination and tell your doctor what you suspect your
child may have. Be sure to tell them about any and all
symptoms your child may be experiencing.

which means the bodies own defense system attacks the
body’s tissues or organs.

Type 2 diabetes
Diabetes also known as 'Diabetes Mellitus' is a medical disease of metabolic characterized by increasing level of glucose (sugar) in blood followed by insufficient generation of insulin, in body or irresponsiveness of body cells to the insulin generated. Insulin is a hormone that is responsible for producing energy out of sugar, starches and other foods of the body. The natural process of producing blood sugar in body is at a narrow level which is done by insulin and glucagon, responsible for producing energy by releasing glucose from the cells of lever to the blood. Insufficient quantity of insulin in body causes abnormal production of glucose in the blood stream, a major factor for aggravating blood sugar levels with many subsequent health complications.
'Diabetes Mellitus is such lifelong medical disorder that needs proper medical attention together with diet cautions under the medical observation of expert dieticians and physicians.
There are three main types of diabetes such as Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes and Gestational diabetes. In this article we will highlight about type 2 diabetes.
What is type 2 diabetes?
Type 2 diabetes is medically a choric syndromes caused by increased level of sugar in blood followed by insulin resistance and its insufficient production in the body. Type 2 Diabetes is also known as NIDDM - Non-insulin-dependent Diabetes Mellitus. Dietary modifications and enough exercise are said to manage onset of diabetes in patients. The medical treatments of the patients are subject to their conditional situations and subsequent medical attention, accordingly.
Sign and symptoms
Patients affected with type 2 diabetes undergo with few medical symptoms like frequent urination, increased appetite, increased thirst, weight loss and exhaustion. Sometimes the patients also experience blurred vision and erectile dysfunction, a medical condition for inability to erect penis enough for sexual intercourse.
Cause
A number of improper lifestyles such as less healthy food intakes, minimum or no physical activity, too much smoking, and consumption of alcohol in abnormal quantity are said to be prime factors for type 2 diabetes. As per medical conditions, some factors are responsible for aggravating diabetes. They are obesity, hypertension, high blood sugar, insulin resistance and other metabolic syndromes. As per the genetic conditions some factors like relatives with type 2 diabetes, age more than 45 years, myotonic dystrophy – a medical condition of wasting of muscles, Friedreich's ataxia- it damages nervous system causing speech problems and heart disease, Wolfram syndrome – affecting brain stem and central nervous system.
Treatment
The medical treatment is primarily focused on diminishing high blood glucose level in the body. Constant long term medication for decreasing glucose level will eventually slows down diabetes related syndromes. In addition to that, proper healthy food intake and regular exercise are also said to be effective treatments of patients with type 2 diabetes syndromes. The patients should follow particular dietary chart for preventing blood sugar from getting higher or lower. They also make sure that their medication is properly done under medical observation of physicians and dietary experts. They should also change their unusual lifestyles causing a grave concern for aggravating diabetes.
Therefore, we can say that in spite of all the medical treatments available for type 2 diabetes, patients should follow all preventive measures lest the risk of aggravating the disease should slow down.

Fact file for Diabetes
Basic facts
Diabetes is among those diseases which work as a slow poison and very gradually taken over a person's life. It is one of the most wide spread diseases in the world. And it will be very shocking to know that one in four people in USA suffer from diabetes. Whether young or old, diabetes can entrap anybody. When your body is unable to utilize or break sugar and starch into energy it means that you are suffering from diabetes. The level of glucose in this disease goes high and then causes the sugar levels to rise in an individual's body. Diabetes is of three common pre-diabetes, type- type I, type II and gestational diabetes. It is spread among all the age group across the globe.
The next thing that one needs to understand is what work does the glucose do for our body? As we all know that all the food that we consume contains sugar, and the food is broken into a sugar known as glucose. This glucose helps us to produce energy for our daily activities. The glucose circulates in the body and is absorbed by blood cells which work as a fuel to develop energy. Insulin is a hormone that is secreted fro the pancreas in our body which pushes this glucose into body cells. And if there is a breakage in this natural process, then the sugar levels in our body starts rising.
Diabetes starts affecting the body slowly and gradually. Increased urination, weight loss, constant hunger, increased thirst and fatigue are some of the crucial symptoms of diabetes. If these symptoms are diagnosed well in time, then, one might be saved from its ill-effects. But if the disease is not diagnosed properly in the early stage, then, it can take a very bad shape. The initial stage of diabetes is pre-diabetes. During the pre-diabetic stage, there is either a shortage or excess of insulin in the body. People who show the symptoms of diabetes early can be treated well in time and can keep out of this lethal disease throughout their lives. But diagnosing diabetes in the early stages is not that easy. Many people show its symptoms very late. People who get diagnosed of pre-diabetes are very vulnerable, and need immediate changes in their lifestyles and eating habits to control this disease. A pre-diabetic individual can control this disorder by exercising regularly and taking a balanced and nutritious diet.
The basic forms of diabetes are type I and type II diabetes. In the type I diabetes, an individual's body does not produces enough insulin that is needed by the body. This form of diabetes can happen anytime in life but usually happens in the early stages of life. In type II diabetes, an individual's body becomes resistant to insulin. This type of diabetes usually happens in the mid-years of one's life and is the most common type among people around the world. Unhealthy diet, which is high in carbohydrates, lack of exercise, obesity and hereditary are the basic reasons of this type of diabetes.
So, this information will surely help you to keep a check on your lifestyle and stay away from this disease forever.

Diabetes and type of dibetes
DIABETES Key facts * More than 220 million people worldwide have diabetes. * In 2005, an estimated 1.1 million people died from diabetes.1 * Almost 80% of diabetes deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. * Almost half of diabetes deaths occur in people under the age of 70 years; 55% of diabetes deaths are in women. * WHO projects that diabetes deaths will double between 2005 and 2030. * Healthy diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a normal body weight and avoiding tobacco use can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes.
What is diabetes? Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar. Hyperglycaemia, or raised blood sugar, is a common effect of uncontrolled diabetes and over time leads to serious damage to many of the body's systems, especially the nerves and blood vessels. *
Type 1 diabetes (previously known as insulin-dependent, juvenile or childhood-onset) is characterized by deficient insulin production and requires daily administration of insulin. o Symptoms include excessive excretion of urine (polyuria), thirst (polydipsia), constant hunger, weight loss, vision changes and fatigue. These symptoms may occur suddenly. * Type 2 diabetes (formerly called non-insulin-dependent or adult-onset) results from the body's ineffective use of insulin.
Type 2 diabetes comprises 90% of people with diabetes around the world, and is largely the result of excess body weight and physical inactivity. o Symptoms may be similar to those of Type 1 diabetes, but are often less marked. As a result, the disease may be diagnosed several years after onset, once complications have already arisen. o Until recently, this type of diabetes was seen only in adults but it is now also occurring in children. * Gestational diabetes is hyperglycaemia with onset or first recognition during pregnancy. o Symptoms of gestational diabetes are similar to Type 2 diabetes.
Gestational diabetes is most often diagnosed through prenatal screening, rather than reported symptoms. Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and impaired fasting glycaemia (IFG) are intermediate conditions in the transition between normality and diabetes. People with IGT or IFG are at high risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes, although this is not inevitable. What are common consequences of diabetes? Over time, diabetes can damage the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves. * Diabetes increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. 50% of people with diabetes die of cardiovascular disease (primarily heart disease and stroke). * Combined with reduced blood flow, neuropathy in the feet increases the chance of foot ulcers and eventual limb amputation. * Diabetic retinopathy is an important cause of blindness, and occurs as a result of long-term accumulated damage to the small blood vessels in the retina. After 15 years of diabetes, approximately 2% of people become blind, and about 10% develop severe visual impairment. * Diabetes is among the leading causes of kidney failure. 10-20% of people with diabetes die of kidney failure. * Diabetic neuropathy is damage to the nerves as a result of diabetes, and affects up to 50% of people with diabetes. Although many different problems can occur as a result of diabetic neuropathy, common symptoms are tingling, pain, numbness, or weakness in the feet and hands. * The overall risk of dying among people with diabetes is at least double the risk of their peers without diabetes.
What is the economic impact of diabetes? Diabetes and its complications have a significant economic impact on individuals, families, health systems and countries. For example, WHO estimates that in the period 2006-2015, China will lose $558 billion in foregone national income due to heart disease, stroke and diabetes alone. How can the burden of diabetes be reduced? Prevention Simple lifestyle measures have been shown to be effective in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes. To help prevent type 2 diabetes and its complications, people should: * achieve and maintain healthy body weight; * be physically active – at least 30 minutes of regular, moderate-intensity activity on most days. More activity is required for weight control; * eat a healthy diet of between three and five servings of fruit and vegetables a day and reduce sugar and saturated fats intake; * avoid tobacco use – smoking increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Diagnosis and treatment Early diagnosis can be accomplished through relatively inexpensive blood testing. Treatment of diabetes involves lowering blood glucose and the levels of other known risk factors that damage blood vessels. Tobacco cessation is also important to avoid complications. Interventions that are both cost saving and feasible in developing countries include: * moderate blood glucose control. People with type 1 diabetes require insulin; people with type 2 diabetes can be treated with oral medication, but may also require insulin; * blood pressure control; * foot care.
Other cost saving interventions include: * screening for retinopathy (which causes blindness); * blood lipid control (to regulate cholesterol levels); * screening for early signs of diabetes-related kidney disease. These measures should be supported by a healthy diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a normal body weight and avoiding tobacco use. WHO activities to prevent and control diabetes WHO aims to stimulate and support the adoption of effective measures for the surveillance, prevention and control of diabetes and its complications, particularly in low and middle-income countries.
To this end, WHO: * provides scientific guidelines for diabetes prevention; * develops norms and standards for diabetes care; * builds awareness on the global epidemic of diabetes; including partnership with the International Diabetes Federation in the celebration of World Diabetes Day (14 November); * conducts surveillance of diabetes and its risk factors. The WHO Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health complements WHO's diabetes work by focusing on population-wide approaches to promote healthy diet and regular physical activity, thereby reducing the growing global problem of overweight and obesity. 1 The actual number is likely to be much larger, because although people may live for years with diabetes, their cause of death is often recorded as heart disease or kidney failure.

Type 2 Diabetes and Body Fat
Body fat weight scaleBody fat weight scale As we learn more about diabetes disease and body fat, it is clear that we each have a healthy body fat percentage we must now aim for, not just a healthy weight. Our body fat percentage is now a more important metric. Overweight and obesity are both labels for ranges of weight that are greater than what is generally considered healthy for a given height. The terms also identify ranges of weight that have been shown to increase the likelihood of certain diseases and other health problems.
Definitions for Adults
For adults, overweight and obesity ranges are determined by using weight and height to calculate a number called the body mass index (BMI). BMI or body mass index is used because, for most people, it correlates with what would be their healthy body fat percentage.
An adult who has a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight.
An adult who has a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.
Calculate your personal BMI.
The Relationship between Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes
Research strongly indicates that Type 2 Diabetes is very closely linked to obesity. In fact, as many as 97% of people with Type 2 diabetes have the disease as a result of obesity. Approximately 61% of the U.S. adult population can be categorized as overweight (that is about 97 million adults). This number has increased by 50% in the last two decades.
Learn more about your Healthy Body Fat Percentage.
There is very strong evidence that losing weight (as little as 5-10% of your bodyweight) can delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes. Losing weight helps to reduce blood glucose levels in many patients that have Pre-diabetes and Type 2 diabetes. Additionally, losing weight reduces the amount of fatty tissue in the body, which reduces the level of stress on the heart and other organs.
Childhood Obesity
In order for obesity to lead to diabetes, a person does not necessarily have to be obese at the time of the diabetes diagnosis. In fact, childhood obesity has a very strong correlation to Type 2 diabetes. According to the Medical College of Wisconsin, as many as 25% of U.S. children are obese (not just overweight.)
Weight status category Percentile range
Underweight - Less than the 5th percentile
Healthy weight - 5th percentile to less than the 85th percentile
At risk of overweight - 85th to less than the 95th percentile
Overweight - Equal to or greater than the 95th percentile
Calculate the BMI for your child or teenager.
Keep in mind that once the body creates fat cells, the cells are not destroyed. Instead, the fat cells always remain in the body, just in different sizes. Therefore, parents need to be very careful about monitoring their weight and amount of body fat in their children in order to help them avoid getting Type 2 Diabetes. Always use to prefer body fat weight scale.

What You Need to Know About Diabetic Shoes
What Makes a Diabetes Shoe Different?
Diabetic footwear tends to provide more room for the foot and for orthotic inserts than a normal shoe. Diabetes shoes tend to be wider and deeper than most other shoes and can be fitted with comfortable insoles.
In most cases, diabetics will have shoes custom made in order to ensure that the shoe distributes weight properly and fits the foot perfectly. Having a custom-made shoe can prevent rubbing, chafing, and loss of circulation to the foot that a person with diabetes may not notice because of the loss of sensation in the foot.
In addition to being specialty-crafted for the diabetic individual, diabetes shoes and diabetic sandals also tend to be manufactured with breathable fibers, such as fabric or netting, so that the foot has healthy air circulation. Good air circulation allows the skin to breathe, which helps to prevent pressure ulcers and increases blood circulation.
How to Find a Good Pair of Diabetes Shoes
• Look for fabrics that "breathe," such as canvas or even sandals. Breathable fibers will prevent your foot from sweating, swelling, and chafing.
• The shoes should be deep enough to accommodate an orthotic insert and wide enough to prevent pinching.
• Avoid shoes that have interior seams, which may rub against the skin and cause chafing.
• The toe box in the front of the shoe needs to be roomy enough so that you can wiggle your toes.
• Elastic in the shoes may also help to prevent the shoe from sliding around on the foot while holding it comfortably in place.
People with diabetes are more prone to foot pain due to an increased risk of damage to nerves and blood vessels. You can help prevent these problems with the following tips:
• Wash your feet in warm water with mild soap every day, but don't soak them. Dry them well, especially between your toes.
• Check your feet every day for cuts, sores, blisters, redness, calluses, or any other problem. Call your doctor if healing doesn't start after one day.
• If your skin is dry, rub lotion on your feet after you wash and dry them. Do not put lotion between your toes.
• Gently file corns and calluses with an emery board or pumice stone (move it in only one direction). Do this after your bath or shower, when the skin is soft.
• Trim your toenails once a week or when needed. Cut them with a nail clipper straight across, then smooth the edges with an emery board. If you can't see or reach them, ask a family member or your health care team for help.
• Always wear slippers or shoes to protect your feet from injuries. Don't wear sandals and don't walk barefoot, even around the house.
• Always wear socks or stockings to avoid blisters. Choose a pair that fits your feet well and has soft elastic.
• Wear shoes and socks for diabetics that fit well. Shop for shoes at the end of the day when your feet are bigger. Break in shoes slowly. Wear them 1 to 2 hours each day for the first few weeks.
Talk to your doctor for more information about how you can take care of your feet. Remember: taking good care of your feet will help to prevent long-term problems like amputation.

Chicago Diabetes Statistics
In Chicago, diabetes is becoming a major problem. According to the National Institute of Health about 8.3% of the population has Diabetes. When you look at the percentage of pre-diabetes - that number is even larger. In 2005-2008, the NIH states that 35% of US adults 20 or older were pre-diabetic and for those 65 years or older that number jumps to 50%. According to the NIH if you applied those numbers to the entire US population about 79 million adults ages 20 or older have pre-diabetes. We're out of control.
What is going on? This is definitely a major epidemic out of control. The health and financial implications of this are more than we can handle. When you look at the cost of diabetes, not only for the individual, but also for our country - you can see how important it is to get this disease under control. Total costs currently for diabetes is expected to be about 174 billion dollars. It's estimated that diabetes alone is capable of bankrupting our economy in America. So obviously in larger cities, like Chicago, there are bigger financial tolls that the disease will take.
In a city like Chicago, there is also a wide array of ethnic groups. We know today that some ethnic populations are affected more so by diabetes than others, so how will the future of diabetes affect our different ethnic communities? We are beginning to see more and more diabetes education in Chicago, but we need so much more.
So what are we doing to change the course of diabetes in Chicago? Certainly the local hospitals are making an effort to market some classes and programs that they offer. The American Diabetes Association is also offering a diabetes expo and free screenings for the public. The only problem we have is that all the groups are teaching the same information; eat better, lose weight, and exercise.
Can we really expect that improving diabetes in Chicago is as simple as just changing your diet, exercising, and losing weight? We know today that type 2 diabetes is a complex disease of multiple organs in the body. We also know that exercise is helpful, but it's just not enough to rehab some of the organs that are commonly not working well for diabetics.
We can change where Chicago is headed with diabetes, but it's going to take a large effort. We also have to being to break away from the old and tired system that is not achieving the results that people with diabetes need.

Type 2 Diabetes Diet
A type two diabetic diet is all about controlling the number of calories people with diabetes eat. Because, unused calories become body fat. And, excess fat cells reduce insulin's ability to remove sugar from the blood.
Maintaining a healthy diet is important for everyone, but it is especially important for people with diabetes. A type 2 diabetes diet and following the right diabetic diet meals can make all the difference to a person struggling to keep their blood sugar under control. But, what is the right meal plan? How much of which food group should you eat?
Controlling Diabetes with Diet
Your doctor has likely told you that you can control your Diabetes with diabetic diet menu. But what does "diet" really mean?
Taking on a new diet, or nutritional habit, means that you must learn about foods that are nutritious for your body and the portion sizes that are necessary for your blood sugar control.
You probably know that some foods raise blood sugar more than others. The foods that turn into sugar in your body are called carbohydrates. Carbohydrates include: starches (bread, cereal, rice, pasta, grains, crackers), fruits and fruit juice, milk and yogurt, starchy vegetables (corn, peas, beans, potatoes and sweet potatoes), sweets and sugar.
Diabetes carbohydrates
Dieting does not mean that you cannot eat the foods you like. Instead, you need to limit some foods and spread other foods out during the day (such as carbohydrate-rich foods), thereby, diabetes supplements, not eating large portions all at one time. Eating too many portions of carbohydrate-rich foods at one time will lead to high blood sugar levels.
For example: instead oGlycemic Index Graphf eating a plate of spaghetti with garlic bread, and a glass of milk (all carbohydrates); make ¼ of your plate spaghetti, add a salad with raw vegetables, a grilled chicken breast, and a glass of water with lemon.
Eating just a spaghetti meal with the bread and milk causes the blood sugar level to rise drastically after the meal. People with Diabetes cannot process all of the carbohydrates in order to bring the blood sugar down to a normal level. However, by choosing the second spaghetti meal, the blood sugar does not go up as high because there is are less carbohydrates to process and it is easier for the body to bring the blood sugar level back down.
Diabetes vitamins & Proteins
Meat, fish, chicken, eggs, cheese, cottage cheese, peanut butter and tofu are protein foods. Protein-rich foods do not immediately become sugar in our bloodstream after consumption. However, simply because these foods do not immediately turn to sugar doesn't mean we can eat an unlimited amount of these foods; eating too much of any food will cause weight gain.
Think of food portions this way...Your 9 inch diet portion control plate should be ½ vegetables, ¼ lean meat or meat substitute, and ¼ Precise Portions Control FOCUS Dinnerware grains/starch. Add a small piece of fruit and 8 ounce glass of low-fat milk and you have a very nutritious, balanced meal that will help control your blood sugar.
This is the start of how you change the way you eat to include a more nutritious diet. For more nutritious eating ideas go to our recipes for diabetics. Remember to include diabetes exercises in your new way of life.

Diabetes and African Americans
There are certain factors that are believed to cause Type II diabetes, which accounts for nearly 95 percent of all cases of the disease. The causes are generally someone with a close relative with the disease, being an African American or being overweight. Other factors include having high blood pressure, high cholesterol and having gestational diabetes while pregnant. It is estimated that about 3.2 million African Americans have Type II diabetes and about one third of them are undiagnosed.
According to the National Diabetes Education Program, there is a current epidemic of diabetes among African Americans. African Americans are one of the largest groups in the population in the United States that are contracting Type II diabetes. In addition, diabetes is also one of the leading causes of death and disability among African Americans in the United States.
No one is quite sure why African Americans are more likely to get Type II diabetes than any other ethnic group. One thing is certain, however. Poor African Americans are more likely to die from complications of the disease than those in other ethnic groups. This is most likely due to poor health care in certain communities, limited access to drugs that can potentially save their lives and less education. Affluent African Americans have the same chance as other ethnic groups of dying from complications of the disease.
African Americans can prevent acquiring Type II diabetes in many different ways. One way is to take a look at the Glycemic Index and realize which foods are harmful to them and which to avoid. Another way is to start an exercise regime and, if they are overweight, lose some of those excess pounds. If they are without health care, they should contact their local municipality about screening tests for diabetes. Many clinics and health care facilities offer screening tests for diabetes for those with low income for free. This small step may end up saving the life of someone who is on the verge of getting this potentially life threatening illness.
African Americans can also start saying no to fast foods that, in addition to being precursors for diabetes, are also linked to heart disease, high cholesterol and even cancer. Many fast food restaurants prey on people in low income areas without regard for the health of those individuals. African Americans need to realize that they are experiencing an epidemic of Type II diabetes in their community and do all that they can to stamp it out.
Many people who live in poor communities, in addition to receiving substandard medical care, little education about disease and limited access to lifesaving drugs, also are inundated with fast food restaurants that seem to target certain ethnic groups. Fast foods are usually very high in carbohydrates, fats and offer very little in the way of nutrition. They are inexpensive, however, and many people with little money find this to be the only way they can feed their family on a limited budget. Unfortunately, most of the foods found in fast food restaurants, particularly French fries, are at the top of the Glycemic Index when it comes to foods that should not be consumed by diabetics. French fries are pretty much the staple of any fast food restaurant. They are high in carbohydrates, high in fat and low in protein. But they are filling.

What You Must Know About Diabetes To Get Easy Control - And Avoid The Painful Complications
WHAT IS DIABETES?
Diabetes is one of the biggest disease epidemics sweeping the world. By the year 2020, there will be over 280 million diabetics in the world. India and China are the countries with the highest number of diabetics. Diabetes is a lifestyle disease that is brought on by the excessive intake of calories and a lazy or sedentary lifestyle (a lifestyle without much exercise).
Diabetes occurs when your body is unable to use the glucose that is obtained from your meal, successfully. Insulin is a hormone that is produced in your pancreas (an organ that is located behind your stomach). There are cells in the pancreas called beta cells which produce the insulin. Insulin enables your cells to transport glucose from your blood into your cells. Every cell in your body needs glucose to make energy which is used by the cell to carry out its function.
When your pancreas fails to make enough insulin, or the cells cannot use the insulin effectively (a condition called INSULIN RESISTANCE), glucose cannot be effectively transported into the cells. This sustained high level of blood glucose over weeks and months is what gives the symptoms of diabetes.
Diet, Exercise and Lifestyle play a very important role in managing diabetes.
TYPES OF DIABETES
There are 2 major types of diabetes - each caused by a different mechanism. Type 1 diabetes occurs in childhood or teenage years and is due to failure of the beta cells in the pancreas to make insulin. This type of diabetes requires insulin replacement a few times daily - this is life saving. The person with Type 1 Diabetes must be on insulin for life.
Type 2 Diabetes occurs when there is an overload of glucose comming into the body. This is usually from overeating foods that release glucose into the blodd stream rapidly (high glycemic index foods). The type of foods that cause and aggravate diabetes are mainly carbohydrates or starches. Being overweight, not exercising and eating large amounts of starchy or carbohydrate rich foods can cause and aggravate diabetes.
There is a genetic pattern that runs in certain families that predisposes you to developing diabetes. However, it is your life style and selection of foods that brings on the diabetes earlier.
There is a 3rd type of diabetes that is due to the immune system destroying the beta cells of the pancreas. This is an autoimmune type of diabetes and has to be managed with insulin.
DIABETES TREATMENT
The 1st step in managing your diabetes easily is to know which type of diabetes you have. Type 1 diabetes will need insulin if you are to survive. Your doctor will guide you as to how many units of insulin you need to take and how often. Insulin is given as an injection, usually in the abdominal wall or thigh. Diet and exercise are crucial in Type 1 diabetes.
If you have Type 2 diabetes, a low GI (glycaemic index) diet is essential. Two types of medication are available that can be taken orally, if your doctor recommends them. The first class of drug (Metformin) improves the insulin resistance in your cells. Excessive fat accumulated around the organs in your abdomen is one of the biggest causes of insulin resistance and your diabetes not improving.
The second class of drug (Sulphonylureas) helps increase the secretion of insulin from your pancreas. Sometimes both drugs are needed in some diabetics. Your doctor will know when to add this second class of drug.
As you get older, you lose more beta cells in the pancreas (apoptosis or natural cell death with aging). The oral drug treatment may now not be enough and insulin may have to be started. You should not be afraid of starting insulin treatment as it can improve your control of the diabetes.
THE NEED FOR GAINING BETTER CONTROL OVER YOUR BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS
When blood sugar levels are persistently high in diabetes, the excessive blood glucose behaves like a toxin and begins to damage the inner lining (endothelium) of the arterial blood vessels causing plaque formation and a blockage to the oxygen bearing circulation. The tissue in the end organs that these blood vessels supply become deprived of oxygen and degenerate and malfunction. The end organs that are most affected by diabetes through this
process are the kidneys, the heart, the eyes, the brain, the nerves of the body and the feet.
When these organs become damaged from the lack of oxygen due to blockage of the small blood vessels as a result of uncontrolled diabetes, serious complications arise. You want to avoid these serious and life threatening complications by learning how to easily control your blood glucose level.
Be aware that intense stress from whatever reason can cause your blood sugar level to go out of control. Infections anywhere in your body can cause your diabetes to rapidly spiral out of control. An often missed infection that may be causing your poor diabetes control could be a tooth or gum infection.
You must be aware that your blood sugar can go very low (hypoglycaemia) - this often happens in Type 1 diabetes, but can occasionally happen in Type 2 diabetes. An out of control diabetes most often means that you blood sugar level is very high (hyperglycaemia).
KNOWING THE FOODS THAT CAUSE YOUR DIABETES TO GO OUT OF CONTROL
Excessive intake of carbohydrates is the main cause of poor control of diabetes. Carbohydrates are starches such as bread, rice, potatoes, pastas, cereals, biscuits, pumpkin, squashes and butternut. Beer is very high in carbohydrates.
Food high in glucose, such as drinks with high amounts of sugar (fizzy drinks), fruit juices, cooked carrots and beetroot can also cause the blood sugar to go up rapidly.
IGNORANCE IS THE BIGGEST REASON WHY DIABETICS FAIL TO CONTROL THEIR BLODD SUGAR
To gain easy control over your diabetes, you must invest some time in understanding the various aspects of what and why you must do certain things in your lifestyle, diet and exercise. Just knowing what to do in managing your diabetes, with the assistance of your doctor, can easily bring your diabetes under control.
